How to Use the Hoof Cleaner
The hoof pick is an essential tool for proper horse grooming. The correct way to use it is as follows:
- We’ll try to remove dirt by working from the heel toward the pastern, taking special care not to penetrate the soft areas of the frog.
- Pay special attention to cleaning the lateral grooves of the frog, as this is a prime spot for bacteria, stones, and any sharp objects.
- When cleaning the central groove, pay close attention for any signs of rot.
- We will check for the absence of cuts or cracks, as well as the degree of dryness in the hoof.
- If we detect a foul odor, there is a high likelihood of an infection. If so, we will thoroughly clean the hoof and apply hydrogen peroxide to the affected areas. We’ll repeat this process at least once a day (and, of course, consult with the veterinarian or farrier).
- To finish cleaning, we’ll check that the horseshoe is still perfectly positioned and run our fingers along the rivets to make sure they’re still in place.
