Tips for proper shearing
If you are going to shear your horse yourself, we recommend that you keep the following points in mind
- The day before shearing, try to have your animal do plenty of work; but not on the day of shearing itself since you will not be able to cut a sweaty coat
- Before shearing, brush his body thoroughly, keep in mind that if the coat is clean it will be much easier to shear
- Always test the machine before shearing (under the neck is a good area). The machine will work properly as long as the blades glide through the hair cutting easily, without any need to use force
- If you notice that the machine is not cutting smoothly, stop immediately: snagging blades can damage the horse
- Always cut against the grain
- Work the animal's body from front to back. Try to cover the sheared area with a blanket (jute if possible, as the freshly cut hairs can get caught in the wool blankets)
- Cut into strips, which will run parallel
- Always keep the blades flat. This is very important, since if you tilt the blades too much towards the horse's skin you can cause a severe cut in the skin
- If you are in a thick coat, go over it two or even three times, gradually going deeper
- If you notice that the horse is showing signs of fatigue, let it rest and take the opportunity to do so yourself
- Especially when shearing the inside of the legs, make sure that the horse does not move, as you could cause a serious injury. If you realize that the horse is about to move, try to stop it by holding the tail
- Keep in mind that the most sensitive areas of the animal are: the head, the lower abdomen, and the inside of the limbs. It is essential that you proceed to cut them with the cold blades of the machine
- Para in areas that are difficult to reach (throat hair, between the front paddles and between the legs), stretch the skin over the bone or the meat underneath with the free hand; this will facilitate the machine's access
- When you finish the shearing process, brush the horse again and put a blanket over it
- Clean the machine thoroughly and always leave it with the blades unmounted
