How to choose your Monofilament
The fishing line is, without a doubt, one of the most important accessories for the angler. Being able to choose the correct diameter and resistance can be the point that makes the difference between getting results or not in a fishing day.
A choice that is not always easy, since we must take into account the type of fishing we are going to do, the place, the species ... and, of course, our tastes and economic possibilities.
The market offers us a wide variety of products: different brands, types of line, thicknesses, resistance... the options are many; read the following comments to avoid getting lost every time you want to buy a line.
PREVIOUS CONSIDERATIONS
The most important thing to take into account when selecting a line is its resistance. This is not measured, as many people think, by the diameter of the line (which will vary, as we can see, depending on the brand and the material used), but the load capacity of the line must be taken into account.
Indeed, in order to somehow regulate the existing difference between the fishing lines on the market, the IGFA (International Game Fish Association) has established a logical criterion based on the load capacity. This capacity determines the force that can be put on a fish to catch it; for the IGFA, this is the basis for the intensity of a fight and, consequently, the merit of the catch from an objective criterion.
Looking around the market we can see how, for the same resistance, there are significant differences between diameters depending on the brands.
Para so that the different metric systems do not pose a problem, the IGFA created a criterion for measuring resistance worldwide
| METRIC SYSTEM | ENGLISH SYSTEM | RESISTANCE |
| 1 kg. | 2.20 lbs | 2 lbs |
| 2 kg. | 4.40 lbs | 4 lbs |
| 3 kg. | 6.61 lbs | 6 lbs |
| 4 kg. | 8.81 lbs | 8 lbs |
| 6 kg. | 13.22 lbs | 13 lbs |
| 8 kg. | 17.63 lbs | 17 lbs |
| 10 kg. | 22.04 lbs | 20 lbs |
| 15 kg. | 33.06 lbs | 30 lbs |
| 24 kg. | 52.91 lbs | 50 lbs |
| 37 kg. | 81.57 lbs | 80 lbs |
| 60 kg. | 132.27 lbs | 130 pounds |
The maximum size allowed by the IGFA for sport fishing is 130 pounds, while the lightest line on the market has a strength of 2 pounds.
In your choice you should keep in mind that the lower the strength of the line, the thickness will also decrease and consequently it will be less visible to the fish. But also do not forget that a thin line weighs less than a line of a larger diameter and offers a softer action, allowing the bait to move in the water in a more natural way; for this reason and taking into account that any of the baits we use will have a specific weight, we will consider that a heavy line will surely offer little naturalness.
In your choice, take into account the following chart of resistances
| DIAMETER, IN HUNDREDTHS OF MM | RESISTANCE, IN KG |
| 0.10 | 0,8 |
| 0.12 | 1,1 |
| 0.15 | 1,6 |
| 0.18 | 2,2 |
| 0.20 | 2,8 |
| 0.22 | 3,2 |
| 0.25 | 4,1 |
| 0.30 | 5,8 |
| 0.35 | 7,9 |
| 0.40 | 10 |
| 0.45 | 12 |
| 0.50 | 15 |
| 0.60 | 21 |
Another of the fundamental points that must be taken into account in a line is its elasticity; that is, its stretching capacity. Thus, a line that is very elastic will transmit the pulls and the thrust made to the lure late; while if the elasticity is not very elastic, it will be faster but at the same time it will make both reel and rings suffer.
A term that we must know when talking about lines is that of "memory", that is, the level of adaptation to a certain situation. Indeed, the line is constantly lodged on the spool, and if it has a high "memory", it will shoot out as if it were a spring, which will undoubtedly affect casting and retrieval.
THE MONOFILAMENT
It is the most commonly used. It is a line composed of a single filament, which will be mainly made of nylon fiber; a material that offers the best qualities that can be demanded:
- Its breaking load is 70 to 80 kilos per square mm (almost as strong as mild steel)
- Its elastic limit before breakage can reach up to 30% when dry and 35% when wet
- Thanks to its special density, in diameters that are not too thin, it sinks in water
The main advantages of this line are that it is extremely easy to cast, in addition to its great effectiveness as it is practically invisible in the water. There are also varieties that are very flexible and thin but at the same time very strong despite their small diameter; these are the high quality ones, which have excellent resistance to abrasion (they are therefore perfect for rock fishermen).
But be careful, low quality monofilaments are usually extremely rigid, do not withstand abrasion and in too many cases the diameter is not consistent throughout its length.
So we must pay special attention to the quality/price ratio that we are offered.
Within the monofilaments, there are two other types of line: COFILAMENT, that is, a monofilament with a special coating that makes it more resistant, and FLUOROCARBON, a carbon-synthesized fluoride polymer that is practically invisible in the water while offering excellent resistance and durability (it does not absorb water, one of the main causes of the loss of qualities of any fishing line).
DATA YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT A LINEIn addition to all the above mentioned about resistance and elasticity, the manufacturer will provide us with a series of data that are extremely important when deciding on a particular line.
You should know the meaning of each of these data
- Diameter: thickness of the line. It is usually given in millimeters, but can also be given in inches
- Weight: indicates the weight of the catch that the line supports, beyond which it will break. It is expressed in kilograms or pounds
- Weight at breakage: this depends on the elasticity and resistance of the line and is about twice the weight. It is given in yarns or pounds
- Length of the line: its size. Expressed in meters or yards
