Spoons: Which One Should I Choose?
Spinners are metal lures that feature a wobbling or spinning action, emitting flashes of light and vibrations to attract trout and other fish such as pike or salmon.
- TYPES
- Wobbling: These consist of a blade that provides weight and creates movement when retrieved. They are typically medium to large in size and are very effective for trout, salmon, and pike. They are usually the heaviest and largest, making them perfect for larger predators. They feature a spinning shaft at the tip and a treble hook at the rear, which may be equipped with feathers. They offer a long cast and perform very well in windy conditions.
- Spinners: These are the most common and effective for smaller fish. They operate much more smoothly than wobblers and consist of three distinct parts:
- Body: this is what gives the spoon its weight and allows us to perform different casts. There are very heavy solid bodies (Ranger, Sar, lead blocks, etc.) as well as lighter options (Meps, Vibrax, or Celta). When choosing a spoon, keep in mind that the heavier the spoon, the longer the casts will be.
- Blade: depending on its shape, you’ll get one action or another:
- Narrow blade: for faster retrieves in calm waters, as well as against the current or diagonally.
- Wide blade: ideal for slower retrieves and low-speed retrieves, such as when fishing upstream.
- Hooks: These are usually treble hooks, although sometimes you’ll need to trim them if fishing in a salmon reserve. To do this, you can trim the treble prongs and replace them with a single hook.
