A quick look at the binoculars market reveals the wide variety of different models available, which undoubtedly makes the choice more difficult.
That’s why we’ll explain below the factors you should consider when buying binoculars, so you can be sure you’re making the best purchase:
- MAGNIFICATION: refers to the apparent enlargement of an object viewed through binoculars, compared to viewing it without them. Thus, with a magnification of 7, an object located 700 m away appears to be 100 m away.
The ideal magnification is between 7 and 9, since less than 7 is insufficient for outdoor use, while a magnification greater than 10 amplifies movements too much, causing some image instability; therefore, this type of binoculars is not suitable for use at sea (although they are widely used on land). - THE OPTICAL DIAMETER: This refers to the diameter of the objective lens expressed in millimeters; the larger this diameter, the brighter the image will appear.
(For comfortable use aboard a boat), the optimal diameter is considered to be 50 mm. - FIELD OF VIEW: defines the width of the area observed at a distance of 1,000 m. (It is indicated in meters or degrees.)
As magnification increases, the field of view decreases. - PUPIL DIAMETER: corresponds to the small ring visible inside the eyepiece of the binoculars. If the pupil diameter is large, it will positively affect the brightness of the image.
For use at sea, it is best to choose a prismatic binoculars with a 7-mm pupil diameter, which is the maximum diameter of the eye’s pupil during night vision; this ensures there will be no loss of brightness in poor conditions. - LENS TREATMENTS: Untreated lenses lose about 30% of the light they receive, which undoubtedly affects the brightness and sharpness of the outlines of observed objects.
Indeed, lens coatings help reduce light loss while enhancing colors and filtering out some UV rays.
MULTI: an additional special coating applied to certain lenses. Additional benefit: reduced color distortion and/or UV filtering. - PRISMS: two types:
- BAK-7: borosilicate prism.
- BAK-4: barium prism. Glass of higher quality than BAK-7. They have a wider refractive index range and allow more light to pass through with less brightness distortion.

A. TYPES OF BINOCULARS
Depending on the internal structure of each prismatic binoculars (objective lenses, eyepiece lenses, and prism system).
- Based on the prism system, we can highlight two types:
- Porro prism binoculars: offering better depth perception and the most economical option.
- Roof prism: with a smaller and lighter body.
- Based on the quality of the prisms:
- Organic: typically made of plastic and of low quality.
- Mineral: or glass; these are the best option and can be BAK-7, more affordable and lower quality borosilicate glass or BAK-4, which is higher quality and provides sharper images with barium glass.
- Depending on the lens coating:
- Coated: Partial coating
- Fully Coated: Full coating
- Multicoated: Multiple layers of coating
- Fully Multicoated: Multiple layers of full coating
- Magnification and aperture:
The magnification is determined by the first technical number in the binoculars’ optical specifications, and the aperture by the second number (e.g., 8x40). Generally, binoculars for amateur use should have a magnification between 7 and 10. Likewise, the larger the objective lens diameter, the higher the resolution, so you should look for a range between 30 mm and 50 mm. - Light Gathering Power:
It should be between 3.5 and 6 to be considered normal or very good. - Field of View:
This is the width, in meters, of the area visible through the binoculars at a distance of 1,000 meters. As a general rule, the higher the magnification of your binoculars, the narrower the field of view will be. - Focus:
Focusing is usually achieved using a wheel or a cam. The minimum focusing distance is very important, since sometimes we’ll also need to observe objects at a very close range. Therefore, it should be at least 8 meters. - Eye Relief:
This refers to the distance that must be maintained between the eyes and the binoculars so that the pupil aligns with the exit pupil. The greater the distance, the more comfortable they will be. - Frame:
This determines how well your binoculars will withstand adverse weather conditions. Desirable features for the frame include being water-resistant or waterproof (submersible) and highly impact-resistant.
Before making a purchase decision, it’s very important to know what you’ll be using your binoculars for, since the features you’ll need will vary greatly depending on the situation.
- Beginner or General Use: It’s best to choose bright 8x40 binoculars with a wide field of view and a comfortable size and weight.
- Birdwatching: The 8x40 models are still a very good option, but if you want to observe birds at long distances, you should opt for magnifications greater than 10.
- Night Use: with a minimum magnification of 50x.
- Mountain: You’ll want a lightweight, compact pair of binoculars in the 8x30 or 7x30 models.
