Choosing the right set of irons is one of the most important decisions when putting together your golf equipment. A standard set typically ranges from 3-iron to Pitch Wedge (WP) or 3-iron to Sand Wedge (WA), although sometimes you can also find sets that include 1- and 2-irons. Increasingly, 3- and 4-irons are being replaced by hybrid clubs, which is why sets starting with a 4-iron or 5-iron are among the best-sellers.
The 3-iron has a lower loft—20° at the sweet spot—and produces a low, long shot of approximately 200 yards. The Pitch Wedge, with a 50-degree loft at the other end of the spectrum, produces high shots but doesn’t carry as far.
The mid-irons—4, 5, 6, and 7—cover the relative distances in yards between the clubs at either end of the range.
How Irons Are Manufactured
Clubheads are manufactured using two different processes:
- Cast irons: These account for nearly 90% of the market and involve pouring molten metal into a mold to form the clubhead. This process helps prevent twisting on centered hits.
There are also irons made of cast 17-4 stainless steel, which refers to the iron’s composition—17% chromium and 4% nickel. These cast irons are typically designed for players with low handicaps. - Forged irons: These are made from a soft piece of steel that is hammered into the desired shape. They offer much greater feel but also come at a higher cost.
- Titanium irons: Cast titanium is the same material used in the space shuttle; it is as strong as steel and weighs less than half as much. This allows for the construction of larger clubheads with larger sweet spots. They tend to be very lightweight clubs that are easy to swing and very forgiving, though they are also the most expensive of the three. They are designed for players with high handicaps.
The main difference is weight, since graphite shafts are lighter, allowing for faster swings and longer drives.
Steel is much more durable than graphite and also easier to manufacture, in addition to providing much more consistent shots than graphite clubs.
Graphite absorbs more vibration, so it’s said to have a “dull” feel on impact, while steel shafts are crisper and louder.
- Shaft Flexibility: Stiff shafts offer greater accuracy with faster swings but result in shorter distance than those with lower swing speeds. A Light shaft is suitable for lower swing speeds, such as those of senior players. The most common are regular flex clubs, as they are suitable for most players.
- Loft and Lie: If the iron head is too flat, it can create resistance against the grass and cause shots to veer to the right. If, on the other hand, the loft is too vertical, the heel will dig into the ground and push shots to the left. Therefore, we can conclude that shorter golfers will benefit most from flatter lofts, while taller golfers will benefit from slightly more vertical lofts.
