How to choose your fenders
Nowadays, the use of fenders is practically essential; therefore, they should almost be considered within the group of safety materials that a vessel must have.
In general terms, we must say that a fender must meet two main characteristics:
- Resistance to great compressions
- Resistance to strong friction
But in addition to this, there are a number of tips that should be known to correctly choose the fenders that best suit the boat:
- Do not choose fenders of small size: many do so, motivated by the problem of stowage on board; being all a mistake. It is preferable to fit fewer fenders, but of the right diameter.
Below is a chart that will be of great help to guide you in choosing the right diameter of your fenders:BOAT LENGTH RECOMMENDED FENDER DIAMETER 4-6 m. 9 cm. 6-8 m. 13 cm. 7-9 m. 15 cm. 8-12 m. 20 cm. 10-14 m. 23 cm. - You must have a minimum of 6 fenders, whatever the length of your boat and, if possible, a seventh one of larger diameter than the rest (it will be extremely useful when another boat is abalone to yours)
- Always remember to tie the fenders tightly with a whipstopper knot, on the bulwark, at the base of the candlesticks, or on the balconies (avoid the fenders)
- When the wind is blowing and there is sea, position the fenders so that they cover a maximum of the freeboard
- Note that if your boat is in a rough area, you should choose longer fenders
