• Barrels:
  A shotgun with two barrels mounted one above the other. The way they are mounted may vary depending on the specific shotgun model; the joint can be solid, ventilated, or separated. The front sight is the primary optical element of these barrels, taking on greater importance than in the case of side-by-side shotguns; it can be metal, plastic, fluorescent, or a combination, and it is not uncommon for the gun to have two front sights.

  Tall and narrow. The most common receiver among over-and-under shotguns is the Anson & Deeley, which is externally characterized by a half-receiver, whereas the Holland & Holland receiver is full-length.

When selecting the most suitable shotgun, there are a number of features that should be taken into account:
The barrel length: It’s truly surprising how many different barrel lengths are available, ranging from 60 to 81 cm. But the most important factor regarding length is that it allows the gun to be perfectly balanced. Barrel length has little effect on ballistics but significantly influences accuracy and handling. Thus, a shotgun with a long barrel does not necessarily have a higher muzzle velocity or greater range, but it will make aiming easier.
It is generally recommended that the most suitable length for semi-automatic shotguns is less than 71 cm (60 or 65 cm is sufficient), for pump-action shotguns less than 76 cm (70 or 71 cm), and for double-barreled or single-shot shotguns, less than 76 cm (70 or 71 cm).
As for chokes, we must choose between versatility and shot pattern quality; fixed chokes offer a better shot pattern but much less versatility. Thus, semi-automatic and pump-action shotguns typically use interchangeable chokes, while competition shotguns tend to use fixed chokes.
When selecting the type of barrel, we must keep in mind that rifled barrels are only useful for shooting at ranges under 15 meters. They are suitable (as a specialized solution) for woodcock, quail, and rabbit.
It is also important to understand what receiver plates are; these refer to firearms in which the most important components of the firing, trigger, and safety mechanisms are housed either in recesses located at the bottom of the receiver (half-plate) or in side plates attached behind the receiver, which are usually oval-shaped (full plate). The full plate is generally safer, but it has the drawback of being more complex and requires much more careful adjustments.
Another very common feature in single- or double-shot firearms is the automatic ejector—a device that ejects empty casings from the chamber.
The stock is, without a doubt, another of the topics that most often confuses us. The so-called “English” stock is straight at the bottom, has no bulges or protrusions to rest the palm of the hand on, and is suitable for firearms with two triggers. “Pistolete” or “pistolet” stocks offer a very consistent shooting position and sight picture, as well as great ease when raising the firearm. “Monte Carlo” stocks have a straight and higher back, making them suitable for raised-position shooting.

Ultimately, it’s always good to know the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of each type of gun; however, the final decision should be based on a thorough and realistic analysis of your needs, abilities, and preferences. It is, ultimately, a personal choice.
